Pre-Rolled Joints: What Is Actually In Them

Herb Shack guide to pre-rolled joints, from R90 single rolls to R250 combo packs

Pre-rolled joints are the least complicated thing on the shelf: the bud is ground, rolled and finished for you, so there is nothing to buy alongside it and nothing to learn first. That convenience is why they sell, but it also hides what you are getting — and the grade inside matters just as much here as it does on the Pure Bud shelf.

What goes into a pre-roll

Every pre-roll at Herb Shack is the same three things: flower, a paper and a filter tip. Ours are rolled at 1.2g, which is a comfortable size to share and enough to judge a strain properly rather than guessing from two pulls.

The variable is the flower. A pre-roll made with indoor bud costs more than one made with outdoor for exactly the reasons covered in our guide to indoor vs outdoor bud — the growing method, not the rolling, sets the price.

The range, and what each one is for

  • Greendoor A+ — R90. The entry point, and the cheapest way to find out whether you like a strain before committing to a jar.
  • Indica Indoor, Hybrid Indoor, Sativa Indoor — R120 to R130. Indoor flower in a pre-roll. Buy these when you want the good stuff without grinding and rolling it yourself.
  • Outdoor Pre-roll Combo — R120 for 3 x 1.2g. Three rolls for the price of one indoor single. Far and away the best value if you are stocking up rather than sampling.
  • Outdoor Cocktail Combo — R120 for 3 x 1.2g. Same maths, but three different strains instead of three of the same.
  • Greendoor Cocktail Combo — R250 for 3 x 1.2g. The premium cocktail pack.
  • Moonstick — R150. A heavier, specialist roll rather than an everyday one.

When pre-rolled joints beat rolling your own

Rolling your own is cheaper per gram, full stop. A gram of AAA Outdoor is R50, and a pack of OCB papers with filters is R35 and lasts a long time. If you smoke regularly, that is the sensible setup.

Pre-rolls win in three situations: when you want to try a grade before buying a jar of it, when you are sharing and cannot be bothered rolling five, and when you want something ready to go without carrying a grinder and papers around. The cocktail combos are built for the first case — three strains, one price, no commitment.

Picking your first one

If you have never bought from us before, start with an outdoor combo at R120. Three rolls, three chances to work out what you actually like, and it costs the same as a single indoor. Once you know your preference, buy the flower by the gram and roll it — or keep buying the pre-roll if the convenience is worth R30 to you. Both are reasonable answers.
